Sydney Port Stevedores have assured Sydney Port Corporation (SPC) that they are trying to implement processes to end a prolonged period of congestion at Sydney Port Terminals.
Shipping Lines are remaining extremely frustrated at the delays in servicing vessel arrivals at Sydney over recent months, some lines encountering up to seven (7) days delay in vessel berthing over this period.
Some lines have hinted at implementing a port congestion surcharge for all calls at Sydney port should there be no improvement, however SPC have described the major delays as attributable to the Sydney container trade growing at around 8% per annum, coupled with a fatality of a port worker at Patrick’s facility and the installation of new cranes on one of D.P. World’s berth, rendering it unworkable for some time.
Sydney Ports Corporation have agreed the delays have been significant and are working closely with Patrick’s and DP World to rectify the situation as soon as possible. SPC would not be drawn on suggestions that Port Botany’s international reputation had suffered as a result of the delays.
